Themed pictures in the 6-seater compartments
With their nostalgic interiors, the 1st class long-distance express train carriages of the "Suisse Train Bleu" from the 1950s are an endearing piece of railroad history. The carriages have covered hundreds of thousands of rail kilometers over the past half century and have transported many a traveler to their vacation destination since the 1960s.
The Suisse Train Bleu consists of three side-aisle coaches with comfortable 1st class 6-seater compartments. It is supplemented by a 1st and Comfort class side-aisle carriage and a bar carriage. The latter underwent a complete overhaul and interior refit in 2020, thanks in part to the support of the Schützengarten brewery. This means that the entire composition can once again be used for cross-border adventure trips and nostalgia trips at full steam, just like back then.
During the conversion, it was discovered that the defects in the carriages were more serious than originally assumed. Some of the floors had to be replaced and all the windows had to be resealed - which resulted in a new coat of paint. In addition, various other repairs still need to be carried out.
"It is important to us that the existing charm of the carriages is preserved. Volunteers in Frauenfeld and Romanshorn have spent countless hours lovingly restoring and refurbishing the blue carriages," explains Daniel Wägeli, Managing Director of Rail Event AG. For example, all the photos in the passenger compartments will be replaced with pictures by two well-known photographers from the historic railroad scene. Each compartment will have its own theme. "We are reliant on financial support to be able to carry out this additional and unforeseen expense for the interior renovation. Only thanks to donations will we be able to renovate the Suisse Train Bleu to the point where it can once again travel in the style of a long-distance express train from the 1960s," explains Daniel Wägeli.
Rail Event AG and ZRT Bahnreisen are working together to ensure that the Suisse Train Bleu can continue to be used in Switzerland and abroad in the future. They can count on the support of the rail transport company TR Trans Rail AG.
The renovation of the train will ensure that a piece of railroad history is not forgotten and that many rail travelers can continue to benefit from unforgettable travel experiences in the future.
